How this is compiled

This page sets out where the entries come from, what is deliberately left out, and how to tell us that something is wrong. The same method is applied to all eighteen hotels, whichever section they sit in, and it is applied again whenever an entry is revised.

How the hotels were chosen

Four sections were fixed first, then filled with working hotels that plainly belong in them. Nothing was included in exchange for payment, and nothing was excluded for want of it. Where a chain address could not be confirmed on the operator's own pages, another working address of the same chain was used and named openly.

Which sources are used

Hotel websites come first, followed by mapping services, architectural and design writing, and dated press coverage. A year appears in an entry only where a source states it. Where sources disagree, the sentence is rewritten so that it stays true without the disputed detail.

What is not here

There are no charges, no star classifications, no room counts, no reviews, no marks and no booking buttons. Hotels are not measured against one another. Nothing is written about the operation of the casino floor, and no page carries an inducement to travel, to spend or to stay.

How to report an error

Corrections are welcome and are the fastest way to improve this reference. Write to us through the contact page, naming the entry and, where you can, the published source that contradicts it. Entries are amended in place, and the checked date at the foot of the entry is moved forward.

How to read the winter section

Structures made of snow and ice belong to one winter. They are raised from scratch each year, they melt, and the following season's version is a different building. Dates are set by each operator and are not repeated here. Heated glass igloos are ordinary buildings and are not snow rooms, and where an operator keeps a snow structure standing beyond winter, the entry says so plainly instead of treating it as the rule.

What the three groups mean

The index on the front page sorts the eighteen by the building rather than by the section. A house enters Converted buildings only where a source states its earlier use, and Built as hotels only where a source states that it was raised for guests. Snow and ice structures always sit in Raised each winter, because that is what they are.
